The most important trend in IT is the rise of cyber-crime.

cybercrime

Last week a group of Russian hackers known as Evil Corp attacked US companies with their newest ransomware attacks. Evil Corp, no relation to the Evil Corp on the TV series Mr. Robot, was indicted by the DOJ last year, and their management is still on the wanted list.

As we rely more on our computer systems, Covid-19 has created the perfect storm for cyber-crime.

  • Work-from-home computers are outside of the company firewalls
  • Rise of more sophisticated attacks
  • Hacker are organized and targeted
  • Acceleration of digital trends such as VR

Each one of these topics deserves attention, but the bottom-line is that the environment has become more dangerous and a bigger threat to corporate data.

The need for increased security will have many implications for businesses as they will have to devote more resources to protecting themselves from next generation attacks. Increased security will have other costs because security is always a tradeoff with usability.
